Actor, author, director, poet, and scholar—James Franco is a jack-of-all-trades. Still well-known for his first leading role in the cult hit Freaks and Geeks, Franco has since starred in films such as 127 Hours, written a novel, and earned three simultaneous degrees (Columbia, NYU, and Brooklyn College). He also probably can wrestle a bear with his arm tied behind his back while composing a symphony. He’s just that good at everything.
Well… maybe not everything.
It seems the star is in a bit of trouble for trying to have a less than innocent encounter with a 17-year-old fan. On Friday he apologized on LIVE with Kelly & Michael and admitted to the cringe-worthy act, there is a theory, presented in this Hollywood Life article, that it was all a publicity stunt for Franco’s latest film.
Written and directed by Gia Coppola, the latest in a long line of Coppola filmmakers, Palo Alto is an adaptation of Franco’s collection of short stories. The film follows a group of troubled teens who are trying to navigate the love, lust, and that feeling of immortality that comes with being a teenager.
Franco stars as a creepy soccer coach who lusts after a high school student, played by Emma Roberts. We’re not sure if we buy the publicity stunt angle, but it is a pretty strange coincidence. Check out the trailer and judge for yourself. The film hits theaters May 9, 2014.
