Veronica Mars returns! The long-awaited Veronica Mars movie is out in theaters today, and sees the former teen sleuth is going back to her roots to clear the name of her ex-boyfriend Logan, accused of murdering his pop star girlfriend.
Originally conceived as a YA book series, the television series followed Veronica Mars (played by Kristen Bell), a clever high schooler who solved crimes in her spare time.
First airing in 2004, the show smartly skewered the film noir genre while still tackling teen issues. Though only lasting three seasons, the show built up an intense fan base.
The road to making this movie a reality wasn’t easy. Shortly after the show’s cancellation in 2007, creator Rob Thomas wrote up a film version, but Warner Brothers was having none of it. So Thomas and Bell took to fundraising site Kickstarter to make an appeal to hardcore Mars fans—referred to as Marshmallows—and they more than came through. The fans surpassed the $2 million goal, raising over $5 million to bring us back to Neptune!
In addition to the movie, Thomas has written the first of several Veronica Mars mysteries starring 28-year-old Veronica, with the first book to be released on March 25, 2014. In this video, stars Kristen Bell and Jason Dohring (Logan) give us a little taste of what we should expect from the film:
