The Bard Rebranded

Random House fiction imprint Hogarth is asking its “best living writers” to “reinterpret Shakespeare” for modern audiences while staying “true to the spirit of the original dramas.” It has already commissioned Pulitzer Prize winner Anne Tyler to rewrite The Winter’s Tale as a novel, and Witbread Award winner Jeanette Winterson to do the same with The Taming of the Shrew. Their books—along with those of several as-yet unannounced authors—will be simultaneously released across the English-speaking world in 2016, the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death.
