8 Picture Book Recommendations for the Royal Baby

Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Are you eagerly awaiting the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first child? We are! As anglophiles, the Bookish team has loved following the romance of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry and we know they’re going to be wonderful parents. In an old interview, Meghan shared that one book that she would want to read to her own children is The Giving Tree. We were immediately inspired to put together a list of picture books that feature themes that both Meghan and Harry might want to pass on to their child.

The Duchess and Guy by Nancy Furstinger, illustrated by Julia Bereciartu

This picture book is inspired by the Duchess herself and her adorable pup Guy. The royal baby will go gaga over seeing their puppy brother in the pages of a book.

Prince & Knight by Daniel Haack, illustrated by Stevie Lewis

In this sweet story, the prince is swept off his feet by a gallant knight. Meghan and Harry are both advocates for LGBTQ+ rights, which is why we think this book should make it onto their child’s bookshelf.

I Am Enough by Grace Byers, illustrated by Keturah A. Bobo

Since the royal baby will be seventh in line for the British monarchy, they will always be in the public eye. A book that encourages confidence will be a must.

Woke Baby by Mahogany L. Browne, illustrated by Theodore Taylor III

With two parents who care deeply about human rights, we can only hope that this royal baby will grow up ready to change the world and make an impact using their platform.

I Am Human by Susan Verde, illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds

Following in Princess Diana’s footsteps, Prince Harry has been committed to humanitarian efforts from a young age. This picture book aims to show that we are all imperfect, and we all need to show empathy and compassion to others.

A Family Is a Family Is a Family by Sara O’Leary, illustrated by Qin Leng

As a mixed-race family, we think Meghan and Harry will love this book about how families come in all shapes and sizes.

I Will Be Fierce by Bea Birdsong, illustrated by Nidhi Chanani

Meghan has been an outspoken feminist since a young age, and we think she would adore this book about a young girl with a boundless imagination who wants to be the hero of her own story.

All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold, illustrated by Suzanne Kaufman

With their collective work for the U.N. and Prince Harry’s involvement in the Invictus Games, it is clear that embracing what makes us unique and different is very important to the Duke and Duchess. This picture book shows just that.
