PEN/Faulkner Finalists


From 350 fiction books published in 2012 and submitted for consideration, only five were chosen by judges Walter Kirn, Nelly Rosario, and A.J. Verdelle for the 33rd PEN/Faulkner award.

Finalists include: Threats by Amelia Gray, published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux; Kind One by Laird Hunt, published by Coffee House Press; Hold it ‘Til It Hurts by T. Geronimo Johnson, published by Coffee House Press;Watergate by Thomas Mallon, published by Pantheon; and Everything Begins & Ends at the Kentucky Club by Benjamin Alire Sáenz, published by Cinco Puntos Press.

The award and $15,000 prize will be presented May 4th in Washington, D.C. at the Folger Shakespeare Library—with the other four finalists each receiving $5,000.
