PEN American Center—our nation’s chapter of literary organization PEN International—has announced the shortlist for its 2013 literary awards,“the most comprehensive in the country” according to Executive Director Suzanne Nossel. Extending from fiction and biography to sports and translation, the 16 fellowships and prizes total almost $150,000—the most lucrative being the $25,000 Robert W. Bingham Prize for a debut work of fiction that “represents distinguished literary achievement and suggests great promise.” Nominees include Wiley Cash’s A Land More Kind Than Home and Claire Vaye Watkins’ Battleborn.
