Kami Garcia’s latest young adult novel, The Lovely Reckless, follows two star-crossed lovers: Frankie Devereux and Marco Leona. After the death of her boyfriend, Frankie decided that nothing in the world mattered, leading to bad decision after bad decision. Her troubles catch up with her and soon she’s sent to a new school, where she meets Marco. Their connection is instant, and despite the danger that surrounds him, she can’t stay away. In honor of her new couple, Garcia shared with Bookish some of her favorite romantic pairs from young adult novels.
Mallory and Rider
Looking for a couple that will tug at your heartstrings? Meet Mallory and Rider. Growing up in an abusive foster home together, they forged an unbreakable bond. But after a terrifying event, Mallory is removed from the foster home and placed with a loving family, losing track of Rider in the process. When Mallory enrolls in public school four years later and Rider walks into her speech class, sparks fly. The connection between them is stronger than ever. Rider will steal your heart. He’s protective without being possessive, and his nickname for Mallory, “Mouse,” will give you butterflies.
Kady and Ezra
Ezra and Kady are anything but your average run-of-the-mill couple. Instead of the typical boy-meets-girl formula, their story is closer to girl breaks up with boy, girl and boy’s home planet is destroyed, and girl and boy must find each other again, while contending with evil corporations, an insane AI, and murderous zombies—in space. Kady and Ezra are impressive as individuals—she’s a hacker and he’s a fighter pilot—but together, they’re pretty much unstoppable. And seeing them rekindle their feelings for each other as they try to beat the odds and stay alive? That’s something you definitely don’t want to miss.
Cath and Levi
Cath Avery is a character every fangirl can relate to—either you know her, or you’re a girl like her. She’s smart, introverted, and a talented writer, especially when it comes to fanfiction. Cath is nervous about going off to college and leaving her father to fend for himself. When her outgoing twin decides not to room with her at the last minute, it only makes matters worse. But when Cath meets her roommate, Reagan, and Reagan’s friend, Levi, she starts to come out of her shell. Levi is basically the farm boy of your dreams: polite, smart, loyal, and always smiling. At first, Cath has a hard time believing that Levi could be interested in her. Watching their relationship develop over the course of freshman year is so satisfying. It’s sweet, slow, and realistic. What’s not to love?
Sydney and Adrian
In the world of Richelle Mead’s vampires, Rose and Dimitri usually get all the love. While they make a kickass couple, it’s Sydney and Adrian who get my vote. These two are definitely another case of opposites attract: Adrian is a gorgeous, rich, charismatic playboy who is used to doing whatever he wants without facing any consequences. Sydney is a brilliant, highly organized professional who is used to getting vampires like Adrian out of those consequences. Did I mention that she’s also human? Though it seems unlikely that these two could fall for each other, that’s exactly what happens—with lots of swoon-worthy moments (and coffee) along the way.
Emily and Oz
If you have a weakness for irresistible bad boys and star-crossed lovers, Emily and Oz are as star-crossed as they come. He’s hot, brooding, and street smart, and he wants one thing: to earn his way into the motorcycle club he has dreamed of joining since he was a kid. Emily is responsible, cautious, and sheltered—and her privileged background bears no resemblance to Oz’s life. When Emily arrives in Snowflake, KY, Oz’s small town, she has no idea that she’s in danger. It’s Oz’s job is to protect her—while keeping his hands off the estranged daughter of the head of the club. Opposites definitely attract, and these two generate some serious sexual tension. Oz’s genuine feelings for Emily and his loyalty to the people he loves make it impossible not to hope they end up together.
