Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir Fun Home blew critics away when it was published in 2006. The New York Times even said it was a “pioneering work” for both graphic novels and memoirs. The book explores Bechdel’s childhood, with a particular focus on her complicated relationship with her father. As Bechdel grows up, she learns to reject stereotypical gender roles and explores her sexuality. But she also begins to see her father, a closeted gay man who often pushes his own ambitions and views on his daughter, in a new light. Now, the bestseller is going where few graphic novels have gone before: to Broadway.
