On June 11, Sotheby’s will auction off William Faulkner’s 1950 Nobel Prize for Literature medal and acceptance speech draft, jointly expected to fetch $500,000 to $1 million. Also for sale will be the author’s 1951 Legion d’Honneur medal, dozens of leather-bound copies of his work, original manuscripts of four short stories and poems, and a collection of 26 letters—including one with a self-portrait of the author sporting his first beard which, he wrote to his mother, “is getting along quite well.” Why the Faulkner family has decided to part with the heirlooms remains unclear.
