Banks Has Months to Live

Scottish sci-fi master Iain M. Banks—who’s also written more than a dozen mainstream novels as Iain Banks—has shocked and saddened fans with news of his inoperable gall bladder cancer. The 59-year-old Hugo Award winner—for 2004’s The Algebraist—is maintaining his sense of humor. In the announcement on his Web site, Banks referred to his recent marriage to author Adele Hartley by stating, “I asked her if she would do me the honour of becoming my widow,” and says publishers will expedite the release of his new book, The Quarry, “to give me a better chance of being around when it hits shelves.”
