Sweet Tooth: The Perfect Cupcake to Pair with Your Next Romance Read

The only thing sweeter than spending an afternoon curled up with a romance novel is having a book in one hand and a cupcake in the other. Author Abby Jimenez knows a thing or two about sweets. For one, she’s a Cupcake Wars champion and the founder of Nadia Cakes. She’s also the author of one of the must-read romances of the summer: The Friend Zone. Here, Jimenez pairs some of her favorite romances with the perfect cupcakes.

Before I started writing romance, my day job was baking. I founded Nadia Cakes, home to the Vageode® Cake, out of my kitchen back in 2007 and went on to win Cupcake Wars. You could say I’m a bit of a sweets expert.

There’s absolutely no better combination than cupcakes and romance, am I right? Whether you buy them or bake them yourself, there’s a cupcake for every read. My pro tip is this: Audiobooks are my favorite way to read. An audiobook is a great option when you want to enjoy a book with a frosted snack in your hand. Here are a few of my current favorites:

Meet Cute by Helena Hunting

In Meet Cute, Dax’s little sister Emme loves Oreos and peanut butter cups, and there’s no easier cupcake to find! Every dessert shop carries variations of both, and they’re always crowd pleasers.

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang

Esme loves tropical fruit because it reminds her of home—particularly mangos. Since mango cupcakes are a seasonal find, you could always make them yourself and listen to an audiobook while you bake!

Midnight Blue by L.J. Shen

No contest here. I’d recommend a decadent better-than-sex cake. Warm chocolate cake with holes poked into it and caramel and condensed milk drizzled over it, topped with fresh whipped cream and toffee… sigh. We make one at the shop that we call the Inner Goddess. It’s half chocolate and half red velvet. But, let’s be honest here: No cupcake could ever be better than the sex in L.J. Shen’s books!

Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

In Red, White & Royal Blue, Henry and Alex manage to knock over a $75,000 wedding cake. If they’d had cupcakes at the royal wedding instead, they could have avoided an international catastrophe. I’d suggest lemon elderflower cupcakes like the ones that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chose for their wedding.

Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey

I also absolutely loved Fix Her Up. In the book, Georgette flings a melted carton of vanilla ice cream at her long-time heartthrob, Travis. Maybe a vanilla cupcake next time?

My mouth is watering for my next romance read and treat. Let’s all indulge!
