Still recovering from the death of his mother, high schooler Ethan Wate discovers that his hometown, Gatlin, South Carolina, is more Southern gothic than sleepy small town as he's inexplicably drawn to newcomer Lena Duchannes, niece of the town recluse and a bit of an outcast herself. As he pursues Lena, Ethan uncovers that she and her family members are all casters, that Lena will be Claimed for Light or Dark in just a few months on her sixteenth birthday, and that their two families have been linked together since the Civil War. Interfering townsfolk, secret libraries and magical books, Civil War reenactments, an assortment of eclectic family members, and a haunted plantation round out this 600-page tome. Lena surprises everyone, including herself, with her powers and is able to hold off the Claiming for another year (just in time for the sequel). Teens searching for the next supernatural hit will devour each plot twist and stolen kiss, and may even find themselves pleasantly surprised at the substance found in this variation on the theme. Recommended for ages 13-18.

I stayed away from this book for so long because I didn't think I would enjoy it, but once I saw that they were making a movie about it, I decided to give it a go. I don't know why I thought I wouldn't like it, because I loved it! The one thing that really hooked me was the setting. It was so fun reading about the small southern town and all it's secrets. I was so intrigued by Ethan and Lena's relationship. Why was Ethan so special? There was one question that I felt was never answered, and maybe it is answered in the other books, but how come Lena and Ethan can talk to each other in their heads? That was the one thing I was really interested in finding out, but it never was answered. Actually, there were a lot of things about Ethan that weren't answered. But I guess that comes with the next book. But other than that, the story was very fun to read and I will definitely pick up the next book.
